Janma Vighatika Graha

INTRODUCTION
Maharishi Jaimini Says in his immortal classic Jaimini Sutras that the sex and complexion of the child can be known from the ruling planet the exact moment of the birth. The smallest division of time which defines the moment of birth is the vighatika, which is 1/3600th part of a day. We know that 1 day is 60 ghatikas and 1 vighatikas so if the day is divided into 3600 parts, the lord of each part shall define the sex and complexion of the child born at that moment.

We know that the approximated duration of 1 sign to rise is 5 ghatikas (60/12) and hence there are 300 vighatikas in 1 sign (5*60). Thus we might see here a strong link between the vighatika rising at the moment of birth and ardha-nadiamsa, which happens to be the 300th part of a sign. This ardha- nadiamsa forms the basis of nadi literature and can define the life of a native to considerable extent.

This knowledge can be used in to explain and understand completely different lifestyle between twins, who otherise have similar rasi and varga charts. This also can be used to rectify the birth chart till a vighatika or 24 seconds.

CALCULATION
1. The moment of birth is always considered from the Sunrise or Sunset. So the start of the vighatikas for finding the ruler of the moment of birth has to be reckoned from the Sunrise or Sunset based on birth happening before of after the Sunset.
2. The time of birth elapsed after Sunrise of Sunset is converted into Vighatis. (1 Hr = 2.5 Ghati = 150 vighati).
3. The ruler of the vighatikas is based on the sequence of the lords of the weekdays (Su-1, Mo-2, Mars- 3, Me-4, Ju- 5, Ve- 6, Sa- 7, Ra- 8, Ke- 9), starting from Sun. To arrive at the lord of the ruler, divide the Vighatis arrived at the previous step by 9 and round it up to the higher interger and count that number from Sun.

One easier way to find the reminder of a number when divided by 9 is to add up the digits of the number and subsequently adding the digits of the number until we arrive at the final one digit no. For illustration, when 9834 is divided by 9, the reminder would be 9+8+3+4 =24 =2+4= 6 (Reminder)

4. Rising of Vighatis of male planets give male birth, whereas rising of vighatis of female planets give female births. Similarly, vighatis of eunich planets give eunuch births.

a. The Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Rahu are males. In the example, the planets Rahu ruled the semi-nadi amsa to give a male child.

b. The Moon, Venus, Ketu indicates females.

c. Mercury rules the female eunuchs while Saturn rule male eunuchs. However this should be predicted only if specific combination for such a birth exist in the conception chart. Else, Mercury will indicate a female child as Saturn indicates a male.

d. If the Janma Vighatika Graha is placed with a female planet, then it will show female birth and so on. However, if it is not conjoined with any planet, then the sex of the sign shall dominate. All even signs indicate females, whereas all odd signs indicate males. However, there is an exception to this as Pisces and Cancer shows male birth being even signs and Aquarius and Gemini rules female birth even though they are odd signs.

e. If the Janma Vighatika Graha is exalted or conjoin a exalted planet, then it indicate male birth, where as if it is debilitated or placed with a debilitated planet, then it indicate a female birth. This is an overriding principle to the above mentioned principles from points a. to d.

Note: The definition of the sunrise shall have a big impact on the vighatis elapsed. This is because there is as much as 4 min difference in time from rise of the upper limb of the sun and the rise of the center of the Sun. So it is pertinent to decide, what time should be taken as the time of Sunrise.

From time immemorial the rishis, started all the activities of the day with the Sunrise. However, this does not mean that at that point of sunrise, the upper limb of Sun has actually risen on the horizon, rather it was based on the moment they could see the first ray of Sun on the horizon. We know that due to a phenomenon called refraction, the Sun seems to have risen on the horizon a few minutes before the actual rise of the upper limb. As this is the moment, when we can see the first ray of the Sun, it heralds the start of the day and all reckoning should happen from that moment of Sunrise.

So in short, the Sunrise definition for the purpose reckoning the birth time is the apparent rise of the Sun’s upper limb.

INTERPRETATION
The single most important planet in a horoscope, which has the most substantial impact in the life of a native is this janma vighatika graha. This is because, a planet which can determine the sex of the native is a link between the karma of the past life, which has to be manifested in this life. Thus the lordship, placement and yogas of this planet has the most significant impact in the life of the native.

Janma Vighatika Graha= Reminder of 414/9 = 4+1+4 = 9 (Ketu)

Interpretation:
-------------------------
Ketu is exalted and this shows male birth. Ketu is the mokshakaraka and defines the main objective behind the action of the native is to get liberated from this life of bondage. The aspect of Jupiter from the Lagna in pisces, gives him the knowledge of the maharishis through tradition (Jup+Ketu) to take Jyotish to the direction of spiritual upliftment of human kind.

Ketu is placed with the AL, shows that in this material world, he would be identify his goal of life to as spiituality and shall join a spiritual organisation. Because this happens to be the 10th house from Lagna, the focus of the native shall be to keep doing his work, without any benefit from the world (Ketu) and renouncing and material benefit in return.

There is no doubt, that the native has given a big boost to the spirituality (Ketu) in Jyotish (Jupiter) given to him from tradition (Jup+Ketu) and is his sole purpose in this life (10th house placed with AL).

-------------------------
The placement of Mars with two male planets Rahu and Jupiter, given male birth.

The placement of the lord of Birth, Mars in the 5th with Jupiter and Atmakaraka Rahu, sets the focus of life to learning and reaching towards self actualization or self-realization as Mars happens to be the lagna lord.

Time Zone: 5:30:00 (East of GMT)
Place: 85 E 17' 00", 23 N 40' 00"

Sunrise: 5:27:59 am

Janma Vighatika Graha = Reminder (1361.874/9) = 2.874 = 3 = Mars

Interpretation:
------------------------
Mars is a male planet giving a male birth. Mars is the Atmakaraka of the native and is placed in the 9th house with Mercury and Sun and sama - saptaka with the Lagna lord Jupiter. This shifts the focus of the native’s life to the Rajayogas happening in the 3rd and 9th axis.

Mars is the 5th and 12th lord and is placed in the 9th house and aspected by Jupiter, constituting the potent Guru mangala Yoga. The native is a keen learner and has started learning astrology at a very early age. The focus of the native’s life is rotating around 5th, 12th and 9th, showing that the native gets most satisfaction by learning and teaching. The focus of 12th house shows that the native shall be generous as Moon is placed in the 12th house.

Dear Sarajitji,

An excellent writeup on Janma Vighatika Graha. Thank you much. The only comment I had was the birth time you have used for Sri Pt. Rath. The pranapada lagna in Navamsa is Mesha. It is not in trines/7th to swamsa or navamsha moon although Kunda seems to match just fine. So the birth time does not appear to be rectified. Kindly comment.

Namaste.

Rageshwari.

Dear Rageswari,

Thank you for pointing this out. The Navamsa Pranapada Lagna should be in Taurus in the 7th from the Navamsa Lagna. The time of birth is changed to 21:15:26 IST.

Best Wishes
Sarajit
